The Old Farmer's Almanac Predicts a “Sneaky Cold” Winter

Ontario predictions more snow, very cold - sounds wonderful to me!! Cross country skiing has been pitiful with melting snow turning to ice with the season constantly cut short. I am hoping this prediction comes true looking forward to a longer snowy ski season 2023.
Ok - this is a weird prediction. For the southern part of the western prairies - Alberta and Saskatchewan - it can't possibly be cold and WET at the same time in winter. If it is cold, it will be snowy. If it is wet, it will be warm. That's because the average temperatures for December and January are -8C for a maximum and -17C for a minimum. In Fahrenheit that's 17F maximum to 0F minimum. It snows at those temperatures, it doesn't rain. If it rains, it would be above 32F (0C), which is much warmer than average. By the way "cold" would be something around -25C to -35C (around -15F to -30F - that's below zero.). This forecast does not make sense. Sorry.
Hi, AlicjaB, You make a good case and in looking at the specific Prairies forecast, it appears to agree. However, the Summary forecast states above-normal precipitation and below-normal snowfall. We don’t change our forecasts once they are “inked” so, while it does seem potentially incompatible, we’ll wait and see how the weather conditions play out. Thank you for your considered comment. We appreciate your interest!
You have s good question, Alicia.
Neither does the weather, most times. Depending on how the Pacific winter weather blows up it could mean wet heavy snow or a combination of sleet and icy rain and in which month it would happen.
