How to Keep Skunks Out of the Garden

We have skunks living under the house and they keep smelling of spray or spraying and sometimes fighting. I've spent a lot of money on incense this winter. I've got some oranges so I'll leave the peels around the hole where they go under. I'm just wondering if there's a way I can put light right into the hole that goes under the house. Apparently it's a real problem in town and they keep trapping them and can't make a dent in the problem. I also have a malamute with a very thick coat and thankfully he hasn't had a run in with them yet but that's just dumb luck.
4 weeks ago my dog was sprayed by a skunk. It's devastating to say the least and her face still smells like skunk as does her nose and mouth. I can't quite figure out if I have them living under my deck or if they're just wondering around. Last night, four weeks to the day it almost happened again. Both times the skunk was just hanging out in a bush! But my dog sensed it, I couldn't smell it but maybe she could. She didn't get sprayed this second time but she chased it and almost got sprayed. I have been Googling online about different things. I might try peppermint oil spray first. Apparently they don't like that smell. I am not a do-it-yourselfer and I just want something easy. They have it on Amazon. I also have flood lights in the back so when I take her out they turn on by themselves. I have a fenced in yard but I don't let her go out alone anymore. I go out with her on a leash. Big beautiful fenced in yard and I don't feel secure anymore!
Our dogs were sprayed, one was horribly bitten or clawed around her muzzle and sprayed in her mouth, yuck to the worse doggy breath ever! We tried the recipe given and it didn’t work. Went on the internet hunt and found the original recipe calls for liquid hand soap, not dishwashing soap. We also followed the recipe saying leave it on until you don’t smell the skunk odor. It worked like a charm. Nothing helped the doggy breath until a few months later when they went in for their annual teeth cleaning. I understand everyone working wanted to run and the smell made our Vet and her assistant green.
Dish soap tends to be stronger and more effective at breaking down oils, which is why most sources recommend it over hand soap. Perhaps the brand of dish soap you used wasn’t strong enough! In any case, leaving the solution on the effected area for a few minutes is a good idea. Just be sure to rinse thoroughly afterward, and if the smell is still there, repeat the process.
Raised a baby skunk I found almost drowned in a drainage ditch; named her Posey. She never sprayed until she was a year old. My father-in-law wouldn't put her down when she ''thumped'' him, so she squirted up into his armpit. Mom slathered him in bottles of homemade catsup while the boys buried his clothes out in a field. Somehow or other, Posey's cage door was left open and she ''escaped''. A lie. She ran loose during the day and always came back to her ''house'' after exploring so I believe she was carried off and let loose.
