Meet the editors and staff of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, North America’s oldest, continuously published periodical.
Judson D. Hale Sr.
On Sept. 15, 2009, Judson D. Hale Sr. begins his 52nd year with The Old Farmer’s Almanac and Yankee Magazine. He joined Yankee Publishing Inc. in 1958 as an Assistant Editor. Later he became Associate Editor, then Managing Editor, and, in 1970, Editor of both publications. (Incidentally, Hale was only Yankee Magazine’s second Editor since 1935 and The Old Farmer’s Almanac’s twelfth Editor since 1792.)
In 2000, Jud became Editor-in-Chief of both Yankee Magazine and The Old Farmer’s Almanac. In this capacity, Hale has appeared each fall on radio and television shows throughout North America, including “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “CBS This Morning,” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”
“I always work to further the mission of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which is to be useful with a pleasant degree of humor,” explains Hale.
Hale is the author of Inside New England and his autobiography, titled The Education of a Yankee. He has also edited a number of books, including The Best of Yankee Magazine, The Best of The Old Farmer’s Almanac: The First 200 Years, and, more recently, The Old Farmer’s Almanac Book of Everyday Advice, published by Random House. He has also written a book about his autistic brother.
Born in Boston and raised on a dairy farm in Vanceboro, Maine, Hale graduated from Dartmouth College (Class of 1955) in 1958. He also served with the Third Armored Division as a tank commander from 1955 to 1957. He is married to the former Sally Huberlie of Rochester, New York. They have three married sons, Judson Jr., Daniel, and Christopher, and seven grandchildren.
Sherin Pierce
Sherin Pierce is a Vice-President of Yankee Publishing, Inc. (YPI) and the Publisher of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. She leads a team responsible for the long-term strategic planning of the Almanac brand, including new product development, oversight of editorial, and management of the book’s finances and ancillary businesses. She also oversees the Almanac’s robust promotional and marketing activities, including the Almanac’s expansive social media channels.
Sherin has been recognized often in the industry for her forward-thinking leadership, including being named one of the Top Women in Media by FOLIO. She holds two master’s degrees: an MA in English Literature and an MBA in Marketing and International Business.
Sherin lives in Dublin, New Hampshire, with one of her two sons and a cat named Charlie Pierce. She enjoys spending time outdoors, particularly taking long rides on her bike or walks around her neighborhood. She also enjoy travelling internationally and spending time with family and friends.
Janice Stillman
When Janice Stillman joined The Old Farmer’s Almanac as Editor in 2000, she made history as not only the 13th editor in the history of The Old Farmer’s Almanac (founded in 1792!), but also the first woman to hold the title.
In her role as editor, Janice oversees the development of the annual publication, working closely with writers and other editors to develop “new, useful, and entertaining matter.” She also has a hand in the preparation and production of the annual Garden Guide, The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids, the Almanac’s line of calendars and cookbooks, the monthly e-magazine EXTRA!, and a series of cookbooks.
Raised in Norwood, Massachusetts, Janice earned her undergraduate degree in English from Fitchburg State and holds a master’s in mass communication from Emerson College. Prior to joining the Almanac staff, Janice worked as an editor at other magazines, a television promotion director, and a teacher for grades 7 through 12. These days, she divides her time between the Almanac’s offices in Dublin, New Hampshire during the week and southern Massachusetts on weekends.
Janice is an avid traveler having explored multiple countries and visiting many parts of the United States. In her spare time, she also enjoys raising vegetables in a plot at the local community garden, cooking, and bicycling.
Jack Burnett
Jack Burnett is the Managing Editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, as well as for all associated products such as the Garden Guide, Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids, calendars, and journals. An editor of books and magazines since 1974, he has previously served the Almanac as a freelance editor, fact checker, and photo researcher. Jack is also a writer, whose published work includes a Christmas story in the November/December 2002 issue of Clipper, the in-flight magazine of Pan Am; a weekly column in a British newspaper; and a number of bylined and unbylined pieces in the Almanac and the Almanac for Kids.
Raised in East Greenbush, New York, Jack is descended from two long lines of Vermont families. His interests include genealogy and North American history, cooking, golf, and meteorology—for which his first elementary school project was an anemometer made from toilet bowl floats cut in half. He originally came to New Hampshire to attend Dartmouth College—from which he received a degree in English and geography—and has stayed in the state ever since.
Jack lives in Peterborough, New Hampshire, with his wife Diane, who enjoys quilting and gardening. The Burnetts are Canadaphiles, collecting Canadian coins and taking trips to the Land of the Maple Leaf as much as time allows. Over the years, he has done radio and TV interviews (some in person) with more than 250 different Canadian media outlets, many multiple times. Son Christopher, the Almanac’s Associate Digital Editor, is a 2016 graduate of McGill University in Montreal.
For Jack, helping on The Old Farmer’s Almanac sometimes means personal recollections, as both of his Vermont grandfathers were indeed old farmers, many of whose ways of life and attitudes toward it might well have come right out of the pages of the Almanac—and probably did.
Colleen Quinnell
Colleen Quinnell joined The Old Farmer’s Almanac team in 2013 and today serves as its Creative Director. She manages and oversees the brand and design for all associated titles, including The Old Farmer’s Almanac, The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids, Garden Guide, and the monthly digital magazine EXTRA!, as well as all calendars, gardening books, and cookbooks. In 2017, she led the effort to freshen and sharpen the Almanac logo and related branding and identity visuals. This included a redesign of the Almanac, its Web site (Almanac.com), and its line of calendars.
A graduate of New York’s School of Visual Arts, Colleen worked for Walter Bernard and Milton Glaser, pioneers in magazine design who modernized the look of many well-known titles. As Senior Designer under their direction, Colleen worked on the design or redesign of publications that included Time, the Washington Post, and Washington Post Sunday magazine.
Originally from Denville, New Jersey, Colleen now lives in Hancock, New Hampshire, close to the Yankee Publishing offices in Dublin. She’s an avid reader and loves playing board games, especially with her extended family, which includes three sisters, their five children and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Heidi Stonehill
Heidi Stonehill is a Senior Editor for The Old Farmer’s Almanac, joining the team in 2001. As such, she manages the content development of the Almanac’s line of wall, engagement, box, and specialty calendars and also works closely with the Art Director and production department through all proofing stages. Calendar projects (and holiday calculations) start as much as three years in advance and touch on such topics as gardening, weather, astronomy, history, cooking, household hints, and country living. Heidi also compiles and edits the content for the Right-Hand Calendar Pages of the Almanac and has written parts of The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids.
Heidi earned a B.A. in biology from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Shortly after, she became a curatorial intern at the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, where she enjoyed helping the Plant Recorder maintain the maps and other plant collections records for the arboretum. It was there that she had her first (and last) opportunity to briefly operate a backhoe and don arborist’s gear to climb a tall tree (at least, it looked tall to her). After that, Heidi’s career took a jog and she entered the world of publishing, working at Rodale Press home and garden books as a researcher and later, at Creative Homeowner as a web editor. At The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Heidi finds much truth in the old saying, “Learn something new every day,” as her daily tasks introduce her to many fascinating facts.
She enjoys the natural sciences, animals, gardening, music, art, creative writing, sci-fi, and games (especially computer). Her sweet but shy feline, Joey, is slowly coming out of his shell, but finds that snoozing in a dark corner is often preferable.
Sarah Perreault
Senior Editor Sarah Perreault joined The Old Farmer’s Almanac in 2003. She has tons of quirky and little-known facts crammed into that brain of hers, which may be thought useless elsewhere—but not here at the Almanac. Sarah graduated from the University of New Hampshire. She previously worked as an editor at a biotechnology and pharmaceutical publishing company and as a project manager at a textbook publishing company before joining the Almanac team.
Sarah works on all of our products—fact checking, photo researching, writing, editing, and proofing all things Almanac. She is the proud editor of our Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids series. Sarah is also one of our on-air personalities, regularly chatting it up with radio and tv stations across the country.
Sarah is an avid Red Sox fan and enjoys working in her gardens, kayaking, and skiing with her husband and kids.
Tim Goodwin
Tim Goodwin joined the Old Farmer’s Almanac team as associate editor in October 2021. In this role, he is responsible for many aspects of the Almanac—proofreading, fact checking, compiling data, editing, and writing. Tim writes for The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids, the OFA’s catalog of calendars, and Almanac.com. He’s also part of a team that fact checks and proofreads the monthly e-magazine EXTRA!
Tim graduated from Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire, with a B.A. in journalism and a management minor. For one year, he studied at the University of Oregon as part of the National Student Exchange program. The first 15 years of Tim’s career were spent in the newspaper industry in New Hampshire, including a number of years as the sports editor of the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, a biweekly publication located in Peterborough, New Hampshire. He also spent several years as the editor of the Concord Insider, a weekly magazine published by the Concord Monitor in Concord, New Hampshire. Before joining The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Tim served in the role of arts and entertainment, features, and special sections editor at the Ledger-Transcript.
When not in the Almanac’s Dublin, New Hampshire, office, Tim is spending quality family time with his wife, Mary, and their two daughters, Sophie and Penelope. Together, the Goodwin family enjoys going to the beach in Maine during the summer months and sledding in the backyard on snowy winter days—predicted by The Old Farmer’s Almanac, of course. Tim is an avid sports fan, rooting for all of the professional New England teams as well as his University of Oregon Ducks. He also enjoys taste-testing IPAs from breweries around the country.
Catherine Boeckmann
Senior Digital Editor Catherine Boeckmann joined The Old Farmer’s Almanac in 2008. She leads digital content for the popular Web site Almanac.com—now visited by 20 million readers a month! Every day, readers can access weather forecasts, gardening expertise, backyard stargazing tips, harvest recipes, natural remedies, “of the day” history, and seasonal advice. Plus, the Web site offers highly personalized calendars (down to zip code) for planting dates, frost dates, Moon phases, sunrises and sunsets, moonrises and moonsets, visible planets, and tide charts.
Catherine, who became a Master Gardener in 2021, has authored and edited hundreds of articles for Almanac.com, including a complete Growing Guide Library to help beginner gardeners grow their own food and flowers. Under the digital umbrella, Catherine also leads our social media team (Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram), writes the daily Almanac Companion and bi-monthly Almanac Garden Planner e-newsletters, edits the Almanac for Kids Web site Almanac.com/kids, and more.
Before coming to the Almanac, Catherine worked for global advertising agencies, enjoying a career that took her from New York City to San Francisco to London. She transitioned into publishing with The Old Farmer’s Almanac and has never looked back! When not working as a 24/7 digital editor drinking lots of coffee, Catherine enjoys spending time with husband and son as well as hiking, walking her dog, gardening, culture, and travel.
Chris Burnett
Chris Burnett, Associate Digital Editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, joined the team in 2017 after interning at Yankee Magazine, one of the Almanac’s sister publications. At the Almanac, Chris is responsible for keeping the hundreds of articles on Almanac.com accurate and up-to-date, in addition to editing and writing new articles. Thanks to his lifelong interest in horticulture, he also hosts the Almanac’s webinars, which range in topic from managing houseplant problems to planting for pollinators.
A graduate of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, Chris currently resides in the Greater Boston area, where he keeps an ever-expanding container garden of vegetable and flowers, as well as an extensive collection of houseplants. When not gardening, he enjoys hiking, running, and volunteering at a community gardening space.
Stacey Korpi
Stacey Korpi originally began as Director Sales Associate for Old Farmer’s Almanac publications and became Direct Sales Manager in 2014, handling national sales and distribution of The Old Farmer’s Almanac into nontraditional markets such as hardware and home centers, law and garden stores and distributors, and farm and fleet stores. She also handles nontraditional sales of Yankee Magazine in New England. During her off hours, she enjoys gardening, kayaking on (and swimming in) the many beautiful lakes and ponds in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, and daily walks with her dogs.
Janice Edson
Janice Edson is the Direct Sales Associate for Old Farmer’s Almanac publications and Yankee Magazine. Having joined the team in 2015, she is a crucial behind-the-scenes link who provides critical sales and marketing support for the direct sales division. Janice likes the garden and also enjoys many outdoor activities such as hiking, snow and water skiing, horseback riding, and riding her bike.

Hi Folks,
Just saw the bit of trivia about Ronald Reagan's first movie. You say that it is "Kings Row", but Ronald Reagan appeared in movies prior to that. In fact, Turner Classic Movies aired one of his earlier movies today: "Murder in the Air" and I've seen some earlier than that. Just thought I'd pass this on. I love the Almanac--it's my homepage. Thanks!
