I agree with the other commenter, that alternative natural coloring, or no coloring at all, is a better option for many people. Allergies are more common then people realize, or then companies care to acknowledge. Looking our best at any age, is high on the list, but we don't have to compromise our health in order to get great results.
Hi, I agree too about natural remedies like henna. I use to use dyes but hated the smell and sores I’d get. It did relax the kinky gray by my temples tho. After a few years the kinky kinked out and it became straight!!! I then learned of henna. Several years ago I found OFA and tried coloring by moon. Oh, life has been a lot easier because the henna lasts longer. I would quit and let the gray appear but I LOVE COLOR. Gray on me is boring!!! I just don’t feel good in it.
I'm so relieved that these planning tools are available. Finally, a calendar that informs my beauty routine!
Terri, I must disagree with you on one point-- you have ruled out the widening group of people who use HERBAL hair colors. Henna and Indigo imbue radiant color and well-known conditioning/ strengthening benefits. And using them doesnt neccessarily imply a lack of self confidence. I've been refreshing my color (by the OFA calendar) with herbals, to great satisfaction. Dont forget that we are also the OFA demographic, people for whom these celestial calendars were designed.
....You're right however, that chemical hair colors ARE a nightmare. And society should be much kinder.
It seems very odd to add anything to The OLD Farmer's Almanac. As someone with respect for tradition, perhaps a bit of a luddite, perhaps someone who romanticizes the past, I want to protest adding of all things- color hair.
I am 61 and gave up coloring my hair twelve years ago. I have mostly brown hair with three streaks of entirely white and perhaps 25% graying strands overall.
Women need not be slaves to society's expectations! We are all getting older, day by day. When women can accept themselves as a unique creation of our heavenly Father, we will find ourselves happier and healthier. Why feel a need to expose our bodies to chemicals? The long-term use of hair coloring will leave your hair dry and lifeless as straw. I met a woman once and said I liked her hat. She nearly started to cry and explained she had to wear a hat because she had suffered an allergic reaction to hair dye and it left a sore and subsequent bald spot. My third grade teacher had a perpetually weepy eye caused by perming solution.
Your publication would do better to promote natural remedies- selenium, found in oranges, will prevent premature graying.
The Old Farmer's Almanac should remain true to it's long history and strive to introduce a new generation to an appreciation of this history and tradition, not succumb to the passing trends and fads of the day.
