Marchβs full Moon goes by the name Worm Moon, which was originally thought to refer to the earthworms that appear as the soil warms in spring. This invites robins and other birds to feedβa true sign of spring! An alternative explanation for this name comes from Captain Jonathan Carver, an 18th-century explorer, who wrote that this Moon name refers to a different sort of βwormββbeetle larvaeβwhich begin to emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts at this time.

Cat Nights
This term harks back to the days when people believed in witches. An old Irish legend says that a witch could turn into a cat and regain herself eight times, but on the ninth time, August 17, she couldnβt change back, hence the saying: βA cat has nine lives.β Because August is a βyowlyβ time for cats, this may have prompted the speculation about witches on the prowl in the first place.
